Marigolds have traditionally been used as a border plant for prized display and vegetable gardens.
MARIGOLD
Marigold (Calendula officinalis) has traditionally been used as a showy border plant in precious display gardens because of its insect repelling abilities. Marigold deters beetles and leaf hoppers, Mexican bean beetle and bad nematodes. For a cooler colour in the same border, Forget-me-not 'Indigo Blue' flowers earlier in spring, stays much lower and self-seeds happily once it has settled in.
Marigolds bolster the strength of plants that grow around them and are a great addition to compost after they have died back. French marigold produces a chemical in its roots that is such a strong insecticide that its effects linger for years after they have died back.
The jolly orange flowers of marigolds are welcome bright addition to any garden. They have a gentle fragrance and as part of a companion guild will act as part of the frontline defence for your garden beds. As an annual it goes in after the last frosts, flowers for months in a sunny position and usually drops enough seed to turn up again next year, one of the simplest starts among our flower seeds for pots and borders. Where marigolds work above ground with colour and scent, Alfalfa does its bit as a perennial legume, offered in the same Buddy Pack format.
