What Is the San Pedro Cactus?
Achuma, aguacolla, hahuacollay, giganton—the San Pedro cactus goes by many names in its native regions. Found throughout the Andes, from Venezuela and Colombia to Argentina and Chile, archaeological evidence suggests that the San Pedro cactus has been deeply intertwined with Andean culture for at least 3,000 years. Like many natural hallucinogens, it's believed that San Pedro was used for spiritual and religious practices such as divination.
Today, the San Pedro cactus is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental thanks to its large, tubular growth and beautiful, short-lived flowers. 7-ribbed San Pedro cacti are particularly sought-after, as most varieties only produce 5-6 ribs.
San Pedro contains mescaline and lower concentrations of other alkaloids such as tyramine, hordenine, 3-methoxytyramine, anhalaninine and anhalonidine.
