PASSIONFLOWER—A BEAUTIFUL AND USEFUL GENUS FROM THE AMERICAS

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a genus of about 550 species of plants from the Americas. Passionflower species are generally vines, though some are trees or shrubs. The plants tend to produce distinctive, iridescent flowers, which ripen into passionfruit. The nutritionally-dense passionfruit can be broken open and eaten, or can be mixed with water and sugar to produce a drink.

Spanish explorers came across passionflower during their conquest of the Americas. They brought the genus back to Spain, where it’s been naturalized. The Spanish coined the name “passionflower” because they felt the flower resembles a crucifix, which they associate with the passion of Christ.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS OF PASSIONFLOWER

Many passionflower species are high in beta-carboline harmala alkaloids, or harmines, a family of MAO inhibitors. Common harmines found in passionflower include harman, harmaline, harmalol, harmine and harmol.

Other active compounds found in passionflower species include flavonoids, coumarin, maltol, apigenin, saponarin, and quercetin.

HOW TO USE PASSIONFLOWER

A common method of preparation is to take the leaves and turn them into herbal teas. Some users will grind the leaves and place them in capsules for more precise dosing. Passionflower leaves can also be used to make tinctures. Dosage needed will depend on the specific species used, and the condition being treated.

Passionflower vaporizes at a low 145 C, so treat it as one of the delicate end of the vape herbs selection. St. John's Wort sits a touch higher at 150 C, and Wild Lettuce is the other long-standing European herb in the range.
