Echinopsis macrogona: Sacred Cactus With Psychedelic Properties
Echinopsis macrogona AKA Trichocereus macrogonus belongs to the group of sacred cacti of Middle- and South America. Some compare this variety to the Peruvian Torch cactus because it is similar in appearance and has the same powerful psychedelic properties. Staying in the same genus, Echinopsis ''zamnesiana'' is our own house selection, offered as a live rooted specimen rather than in a 20-seed pack.
The origin of Echinopsis macrogona is not exactly known. Some are saying that this variety had been discovered in Bolivia while others are putting its origins to Argentina or Brazil. The cactus has a resemblance to the more-widely known Peruvian torch cactus and like the Peruvian torch can reach a height of several meters in the wild. It can reach a diameter of up to 10 cm with some individual cacti even more. The cactus has a blueish-green colour with grey-coloured areoles and yellow-brown spines. Patient collectors also chase the Aztec Cactus (Aztekium ritteri), a miniature that grows at a fraction of this speed. The broader psychoactive plant seed range covers more cacti and shrubs to raise from seed.
HOW TO GROW ECHINOPSIS MACROGONA
Those who have already grown a Peruvian torch or a San Pedro should not find it difficult at all to cultivate the Echinopsis macrogona. It grows pretty much in the same way with the same (minimal) requirements. Like most sacred cacti, this is a very hardy and resilient plant that will grow fine with very little maintenance required. For optimal growing, a well-draining soil or special cactus potting mix from the gardening store will be optimal. The cactus requires very little water and then only in the hot months in the summer. Give it water once per week and make sure that the soil can dry out between waterings.
