Wild Dagga (Leonotis leonurus): A Southern African Shrub With Vivid Orange Flowers
Wild Dagga is the common name for Leonotis leonurus, a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family native to the grasslands of southern Africa, growing at altitudes up to 2,000m. The plant is visually striking: a tall, soft-woody perennial with square stems and dense whorls of bright orange, tubular flowers arranged along erect stems. It has a long history of traditional use among the Khoikhoi and Bushmen of South Africa. This product contains the dried flowers, supplied in a 5g pack.
Preparing Wild Dagga as a Herbal Infusion
The dried flowers are most commonly prepared as a herbal infusion. Add the flowers to hot water and allow them to steep. The aroma is strongly earthy with a spicy, herby character, a distinctive quality of the species that comes through clearly during preparation. Unlike chamomile or other mild florals, the scent here is robust and resinous, closer to a woodland herb than a delicate tea flower.
