Sandalwoods belong to the genus Santalum, which receives its name from the Sanskrit word chandana, which means "wood for burning incense". Slow growing, hemiparasitic, and notoriously difficult to care for, cultivating sandalwood is a labour-intensive process that requires plenty of skill and patience. Harvesting trees at the right moment is also important, as the age of a tree greatly impacts its aroma—for the production of distillates, trees of no less than 40 years of age are preferred. Due to its rich, lasting aroma and labour-intensive growing process, sandalwood is considered to be one of the most expensive woods in the world.

Native to India, the Malay Archipelago, and northern Australia, Sandalwood has a rich history and is of significant cultural importance, particularly in India but also in surrounding regions. Sandalwood is central to Hinduism and Ayurvedic practice, for example, where it is used to worship the deities and represents Lakshmi, the goddess of well-being. Sandalwood is also commonly ground into a fine paste together with other herbs and perfumes and used for skincare purposes. Sandalwood is also used in Jainism, Buddhism, and Sufism, playing a central role in a variety of rituals, ceremonies, and celebrations. Thanks to its rich fragrance, sandalwood has also been employed extensively in the perfume and fragrance industries.

How to Use Sandalwood Essential Oil
