Hops Flowers (Humulus lupulus) are the dried, cone-shaped female flower clusters, known as strobiles, of a vigorous climbing vine native to Europe, western Asia, and North America. The plant belongs to the Cannabaceae family, the same botanical family as cannabis, and has been cultivated in Europe for centuries. The Hallertau region of Germany stands as one of the most historically documented cultivation areas, with records stretching back to the 8th century. What most people know from brewing is also a plant with a long history of traditional household use. This 20g pack contains dried strobiles: yellowish-green, aromatic, and distinctly bitter.
Preparing Hops Flowers as a Tea
The most straightforward way to use dried hops strobiles is as a tea infusion. Add the dried flowers to hot water, let them steep, then strain. The taste is noticeably bitter, that's characteristic of the species, not a sign of poor quality. The aroma varies by variety: some lean piney, others floral or lightly fruity. If you're used to chamomile or mint teas, hops will taste quite different. Dried hops strobiles can also be vaporised.
