Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu): coral flowers, South American roots
Mulungu is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Brazil's Atlantic Forest and cerrado biomes, also found in parts of Peru and across tropical Latin America. Botanically classified within the Fabaceae family, it is the bark that is harvested and used, dried and shredded into the form you receive here. The tree has a long history of traditional use in South America, valued by local communities for generations. This 80g pack gives you shredded bark ready to work with straight away.
Brewing mulungu bark as a tea
The standard preparation is a simple bark tea. Add two heaping teaspoons of shredded mulungu bark to 250ml of boiling water, steep for 20 minutes, then strain before drinking. The taste is slightly aniseed-like with a mildly spicy aroma, distinct enough to stand apart from a standard herbal infusion. Tincture is an alternative format if you prefer a liquid extract over a brewed drink. One thing worth knowing before you start: the steep time matters here, so don't rush it.
The tree behind the bark
Mulungu grows to 10-14m tall and is well-branched with a deciduous habit. Its most striking feature is the vivid coral-to-orange flowers that appear before the leaves each season, pollinated by hummingbirds. After flowering, the tree produces black seed pods. It is one of the more visually distinctive trees in its native biome.
Advisory Information
Not suitable for persons under 18. There is insufficient data on use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult a health professional when using medication, or if suffering from an illness or health complaint. The whole relaxing range is worth a look. Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) is a loose dried herb from the daisy family, sold by the bag.
Mulungu bark needs a full 20 minute steep, longer than almost anything else in the herbs section. Mulungu is the most asked-about bark in our relaxation herbs and teas. The other 80g evening root here is Valerian, pungent where this one is earthy.
