A Tropical Climber from Africa and Asia
Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens) is a vigorous annual climbing legume in the Fabaceae family. Native to tropical regions of Africa and Asia, it has since naturalised across the American tropics and parts of Australia. The plant is a strong, fast-growing climber with large pods densely covered in fine hairs, the species epithet pruriens reflects this, meaning "itching" in Latin. Seeds vary in colour and are borne in clusters along the pods. Dwarf bush cultivars also exist, though the climbing form is the most widely known.
Traditional Context
Velvet Bean has a documented history of traditional use across cultures in Asia and Africa, including within Ayurvedic practice, one of the world's oldest botanical traditions. It has been valued in these systems for generations, though the specific context of use varies by region and tradition. At the species level, Mucuna pruriens seeds are known to contain L-DOPA (L-Dihydroxyphenylalanine), an amino acid compound. This is a chemical fact about the species, not a statement about this product's tested content or intended effect.
Advisory Information
Velvet Bean seeds contain significant levels of L-DOPA at the species level. L-DOPA is associated with documented adverse effects including gastrointestinal symptoms, involuntary movements, and psychological symptoms. There is also a potential for liver and kidney harm. The pod hairs cause physical irritation on skin contact, handle with care and avoid touching eyes or mucous membranes after contact. Do not use if you are taking dopaminergic medications, including medications for Parkinson's disease. Not suitable for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not suitable for persons under 18. Consult a health professional before use if you have liver or kidney problems or any other health condition.
