Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Seeds: Part of Ayurvedic Tradition
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is an easy-to-grow shrub that is popular in the Indian Ayurvedic tradition. This plant needs little in the way of moisture and can be moved outdoors once the last frost has passed. It can be planted directly in pots and beds outdoors, or germinated indoors earlier in the year, then transplanted. Another woody perennial for the same dry, sunny corner is rue seeds, though rue foliage irritates skin in sunlight, so wear gloves whenever you prune or brush past it. Cumin seeds go in once frost risk is gone as well, but cumin stays a slender annual and it's the ripe seed you collect at the end of summer. It flowers around midsummer, with little red berries. The leaves are a pleasant green, and the plant grows fairly bushy and can reach a maximum of one metre in height, if the roots have enough space to grow. It can thrive in partial or full sunlight, and it is not afraid of heat! Another sun-lover started from seed, Lemon-Scented Gum, goes the other way entirely and grows into a tall tree with aromatic leaves, so it needs far more room than this metre-high bush.
If you intend to harvest your ashwagandha, it should be ready after around six months of growth—or some time in autumn. Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) Seeds ask less of you over the years, as that hardy perennial comes back by itself each spring and opens flat yellow flowerheads in midsummer. Faster still, White Mustard (Sinapis alba) Seeds go from a shallow spring sowing to leafy growth in a matter of weeks, handy for filling a bed between slower plantings. For something you pick from rather than lift, German Winter Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) Seeds make a low woody perennial that shrugs off frost and gives leaves season after season. The rest of our wellness and herb seed selection covers both annuals and long-lived perennials.
These are 20 seeds to grow, not the powder, so read the pack before you order from the herb shelf.
