Klip Dagga (Leonotis nepetifolia): A Tall Herb from Tropical Africa
Klip Dagga (Leonotis nepetifolia) is a tall annual herb in the Lamiaceae (mint) family, native to tropical Africa and southern India and now naturalised across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Its upright stems bear whorled clusters of spiky orange flowers in a candelabra-like arrangement, which is why it is also called Christmas Candlestick. Other common names include Lion's Ear, Shandilay (Trinidad), and Grantiparani (India). The plant has a long history of traditional use in Africa and the Caribbean. The species contains leonurine, an alkaloid found across the Leonotis genus. This product consists of dried leaves and flowers.
Brewing Klip Dagga as a Tea
The most straightforward way to use dried Klip Dagga is as a tea. Add approximately 5g of dried leaves and flowers to a cup, pour over hot water, and allow to steep for several minutes. Honey or sugar can be added to taste. Start with a low amount to gauge how it suits you, as individual responses to botanical preparations vary.
